Novated Lease Credit Check: Does It Affect Your Credit Score in Australia?

By Marcus Webb 8 min read

Every novated lease needs a credit check. The finance company that buys the car runs it when you apply, even though your employer makes the payments from your pre-tax salary. A novated lease credit check puts a credit enquiry on your file, which can nudge your score down for a while, but the lease itself usually won’t appear as a repayment history on your report. Most applicants with a reasonable credit history are approved within hours.

The confusion comes from the way a novated lease is set up. Your employer deducts the payments, so it feels like a payroll arrangement, not a loan. It isn’t. The lease is a finance contract between you and the financier, and the financier wants to know you could keep paying if you left your job. That’s why your credit history matters.

This guide covers what the check looks at, how it affects your score, what to do with bad credit and how to compare quotes without stacking up enquiries. For the basics of how novated leasing works, start at our EV novated leasing hub.

How a novated lease credit check works

The financier runs a standard credit check when you submit a full application. Maxxia says finance is subject to approval from its financiers, who conduct a credit check. Smart says the finance company runs a standard check covering your borrowing history, debts and score (Smart, 2026). Easi describes it as a credit assessment by the lease provider.

Here’s what financiers look at:

  • Your credit score from a credit reporting body
  • Repayment history, including any payments more than 14 days late
  • Defaults, court judgements and bankruptcies
  • How many credit applications you’ve made recently
  • Your employment type, income and existing debts

Approval is usually fast. Maxxia says it approves applications within four hours wherever possible. If something on your file needs a closer look, the application goes to manual assessment, which takes longer.

Your employer isn’t the one checking your credit. HR approves the salary packaging side, and the financier approves the finance. The two happen in parallel.

Does a novated lease affect your credit score?

Applying does, a little. Owning the lease mostly doesn’t.

The application is a credit enquiry. Leaselab says applying for a novated lease creates a hard enquiry on your credit file (Leaselab, 2026). A hard enquiry is a record that you’ve applied for credit. Lenders can see it, and several in a short period can lower your score and make lenders wary. According to Moneysmart, credit applications stay on your report for five years.

The repayments usually don’t build your credit history. Under an ASIC instrument made in 2021, accounts set up through a three-way novation deed between employee, employer and financier aren’t “eligible credit accounts” for mandatory comprehensive credit reporting (ASIC Credit (Mandatory Credit Reporting) Instrument 2021/541). Comprehensive credit reporting is the system where banks report your monthly repayment history, good and bad. So paying your lease on time won’t necessarily help your score, and a financier isn’t obliged to report it.

It still counts when you apply for a home loan. Lenders treat a novated lease as a financial commitment. Smart says a lease is one of the commitments a mortgage lender assesses, and the effect varies by lender. Our guide to novated leases and borrowing capacity explains how much it can reduce what you can borrow.

What credit score do you need for a novated lease?

No provider publishes a minimum score. Financiers judge your whole file, and why your score is low matters as much as the number.

Here’s how Australia’s two main credit reporting bodies score people, as of October 2026:

Credit reporting bodyScore rangeAverage or fairGoodVery goodExcellent
Equifax0 to 1,200460 to 660661 to 734735 to 852853 to 1,200
Experian0 to 1,200300 to 499500 to 699700 to 799800 to 1,200

Sources: Equifax and Experian Australia, 2026. Experian bought illion in 2024, and illion’s 0 to 1,000 scale is being phased into Experian’s.

The two scales don’t line up. A 600 is “average” on Equifax but “good” on Experian, so check which bureau a number comes from before you worry about it.

What applicants report is more useful than any cut-off. People with scores in the 400s and 500s after a few missed payments describe being sent for manual assessment. Several were approved once they explained what happened, such as a loan that’s since been paid off. Others in the industry suggest many mainstream financiers prefer scores above about 450 to 500, though some financiers use their own scoring. A recent pattern of late payments or payday loans is a much bigger problem than a single old blemish.

Can you get a novated lease with bad credit?

Sometimes. It depends on what’s on your file and how recent it is.

Credit issueLikely outcome with a mainstream financier
A few late payments, now up to dateOften approved after manual review
Paid or older defaultsSometimes approved
Unpaid financial defaultDecline is likely
Part IX debt agreementDecline is likely
BankruptcyDecline is likely while it’s on your file

Sources: Leaselab (June 2026), Smart (June 2026) and Easi (May 2025) published guidance.

Leaselab says a single default can trigger an automatic decline with some lenders, while minor, older or paid defaults are sometimes accepted. Smart says bad credit isn’t an automatic rejection, but recent defaults or bankruptcy may lead to a decline. Moneysmart says defaults usually stay on your report for five years (Moneysmart credit scores and reports).

If you’re declined by your employer’s provider, you may still have options. Packagers use a panel of financiers, and each has its own appetite for risk. Ask whether the application can go to a different lender on the panel. Specialist lenders approve weaker files, but usually at a higher interest rate. If your employer allows it, a BYO finance novated lease lets you use a lender you already bank with.

Don’t accept the first approval without checking the rate. A higher interest rate can eat into the tax savings that make a novated lease worthwhile. Our guide to novated lease interest rates shows how to work out the true rate from a quote.

Employment, visas and other approval criteria

Your job matters as much as your credit file. Financiers want confidence your income will continue.

Employment type. Smart says permanent full-time and part-time employees are the standard applicants, while casuals, contractors and temporary workers often face hurdles. Westpac’s novated lease requires applicants to be 18 or over, a tax resident of Australia and on a regular permanent income.

Probation. Leaselab says most financiers proceed during probation if you’ve stayed in the same industry. If you’ve just changed industries, you may need to wait until probation ends.

Visa holders. No major provider publishes a policy. Financiers ask about residency status on their application forms, and some restrict temporary visa holders. Ask the provider before you apply, so you don’t add an enquiry to your file for a lease you can’t get.

Your existing debts. Credit cards, personal loans and buy-now-pay-later accounts all count. Paying down or closing unused credit cards before you apply can help.

Check your own credit report before you apply

Check your credit reports yourself before any financier does. It’s free, it doesn’t affect your score, and it tells you what a lender will see.

Moneysmart says you can get a free credit report every three months from each credit reporting body. Request one from Equifax and one from Experian, because they don’t always hold the same information. Look for three things:

  • Errors, such as an account you never opened or a default that was paid but still shows as unpaid
  • Old enquiries you don’t recognise, which can be a sign of identity theft
  • Late payments you’ll need to explain to the financier

Fix errors through the credit reporting body before you apply. If there’s a genuine blemish, prepare a short written explanation and any evidence, such as a closing statement for a loan you’ve paid off. Applicants who did this report that manual reviews moved faster.

How to compare quotes without hurting your score

Get quotes freely, but submit only one full application. Providers generally run the credit check at the application stage, not when they send a quote.

Ask each provider two questions before you share your details: is the quote indicative only, and when does the credit check happen? That keeps your file clean while you compare.

The EV tax savings make this worth getting right. A Treasury review released in May 2026 found nearly 100,000 people had used the EV fringe benefits tax exemption by late 2025, mostly through novated leases. Eligible EVs must be priced under the $91,661 luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient cars in 2026-27. Our novated lease calculator shows what a lease would cost on your salary, and the electric vehicles section helps you choose the car.

If your provider declines you, ask why. You’re entitled to know which credit reporting body’s information was used, and you can request a free copy of that report to check it’s accurate. Errors are more common than people expect, and correcting one can turn a decline into an approval.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a novated lease need a credit check?
Yes. The finance company behind the lease runs a credit check before approving it, even though your employer makes the payments from your salary. Maxxia, Smart and Easi all say finance is subject to a credit assessment. The check happens when you apply, not usually when you ask for a quote.
Does a novated lease affect your credit score?
Applying adds a credit enquiry to your file, which can lower your score slightly for a while. The lease repayments themselves usually don't build your credit history, because novated leases are excluded from mandatory comprehensive credit reporting. A home lender will still count the lease as a commitment.
What credit score do you need for a novated lease?
No provider publishes a minimum. Financiers look at your whole file: recent late payments, defaults and enquiries matter more than one number. Applicants report scores around 500 being sent for manual assessment and still approved once they explained the cause, such as a loan since paid off.
Can I get a novated lease with bad credit?
Sometimes. Older or paid defaults and a one-off missed payment can be approved after manual review. Unpaid defaults, a recent bankruptcy or a Part IX debt agreement usually mean a decline from mainstream financiers. A specialist lender may approve you at a higher rate, so check the rate carefully.
Can I get a novated lease while on probation?
Often, yes. Lease broker Leaselab says most financiers proceed if you've stayed in the same industry, but may ask you to wait out probation if you've just changed fields. Permanent full-time or part-time staff are the easiest to approve. Casual and contract workers face more hurdles.
