Solar Panel Rebates in Australia
The federal STC scheme is the main solar rebate — worth up to $4,000 off the installed cost of a standard 6.6kW system. Every Australian household qualifies, regardless of state.
See What You're Entitled To ↓Federal Solar Rebate: Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)
The primary federal solar incentive is the Small-scale Technology Certificate (STC) scheme, administered under the Renewable Energy Target. When you install a solar system, your installer generates STCs based on the expected electricity output over 10 years (or until 2030, whichever comes first). These certificates are sold to electricity retailers, and the proceeds are passed on to you as an upfront discount.
The discount is applied automatically at the point of sale — you don't need to claim anything. Your installer handles the STC process.
STC Rebate by Climate Zone (March 2026)
| Zone | Region | 6.6kW System | 10kW System | 13.3kW System |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zone 1 | Darwin, Far North QLD | ~$4,100 | ~$6,200 | ~$8,250 |
| Zone 2 | Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide | ~$3,600 | ~$5,500 | ~$7,300 |
| Zone 3 | Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra | ~$3,100 | ~$4,700 | ~$6,200 |
| Zone 4 | Hobart, alpine areas | ~$2,600 | ~$3,900 | ~$5,200 |
Estimates based on March 2026 STC price (~$39/certificate). Actual values vary by installer and certificate price at time of trade.
State Solar Incentives (2026)
The federal STC applies everywhere. Some states offer additional incentives on top.
Victoria
ActiveSolar Victoria rebates of up to $1,400 are available for eligible households earning under $210,000/year. The scheme uses a lottery-style interest registration system — eligible households register, and places are allocated in rounds. As of 2026, the scheme continues but demand significantly exceeds availability.

New South Wales
ActiveNSW's Empowering Homes Program provides subsidised loans of $10,000–$14,000 at below-market rates for solar + battery systems. The program targets owner-occupiers and low-income households. NSW also has the Peak Demand Reduction Scheme which provides additional incentives for battery-connected solar systems.

Queensland
Active (limited)Queensland's CleanCo Solar Saver program and Queensland Battery Program provide subsidised solar and battery systems for eligible low-income households. Available through select installers. The general solar rebate uses federal STCs only for most households.
South Australia
STC onlyNo current state solar panel rebate. SA's Home Battery Scheme has closed. South Australian households access the federal STC scheme only. With some of the highest electricity prices in Australia (34–43c/kWh), payback periods remain among the shortest nationally.
Western Australia
ActiveSynergy's Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS) pays 2.25c/kWh for solar exports between 3pm–9pm, when grid demand is highest. Off-peak exports earn 0c/kWh. This structure incentivises battery storage alongside solar to maximise self-consumption. The Home Battery Scheme provides up to $1,300 for batteries connected to a VPP.
Australian Capital Territory
ActiveThe ACT's Sustainable Household Scheme offers interest-free loans up to $15,000 for solar + battery installations, repaid over 10 years via your electricity bill. This is available to ACT residents regardless of income and stacks with the federal STC discount.
Tasmania & Northern Territory
STC onlyNo active state-specific solar rebate. Federal STCs apply. TAS solar systems qualify under Zone 4 (lower STC count due to lower solar irradiance). NT systems qualify under Zone 1 — among the highest STC values in Australia.
Feed-in Tariffs by State (2026)
Feed-in tariffs (FiTs) are not rebates, but they're part of the financial picture — they determine how much you earn for surplus solar energy exported to the grid.
| State | Typical FiT Range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NSW | 2.5–6c/kWh | Varies by retailer |
| VIC | 3.3–6.7c/kWh | Minimum FiT mandated |
| QLD | 4.4–10c/kWh | SEQ retail market |
| SA | 3–8c/kWh | Time-of-use FiTs available |
| WA | 0–2.25c/kWh | DEBS — peak hours only |
| ACT | 5–8c/kWh | Competitive retail market |
| TAS | 6.5c/kWh | Aurora Energy standard rate |
FiT rates change regularly. Check your current retailer's offer before making decisions.
