BYO Finance Novated Lease: How to Use Your Own Lender and What It Saves

By Marcus Webb 9 min read

A BYO finance novated lease lets you pick your own lender while your employer’s salary packaging provider still runs the pre-tax deductions. It’s often cheaper. Buyers regularly report bank and broker rates two to five percentage points below the rate their packager quoted, and on a $75,000 EV that can mean thousands of dollars over a five-year lease. The catch is that your employer and its packager have to allow it, and you take on more of the admin yourself.

Plenty of EV buyers only find out about the option after they’ve seen their packager’s quote. A common story goes like this. The employer has one approved provider, the quoted rate is in the double digits, and the provider won’t negotiate or accept outside finance. Others find a self-managed option exists but don’t know how to compare it, because the packager’s quote bundles insurance and sets a different residual.

This guide explains how BYO finance works, who allows it, how to compare quotes properly and what you give up. For the bigger picture, our EV novated leasing hub covers the basics, and the electric vehicles section has every EV on sale.

How a BYO finance novated lease works

A novated lease is a three-way agreement between you, your employer and a financier. With BYO finance, you choose the financier. Everything else stays the same: your employer deducts the lease payment and a running-cost budget from your pre-tax pay, and the packager handles the payroll, GST and fringe benefits tax reporting.

You’ll see two names for the same idea. “BYO finance” usually means you bring your own lender but the packager still manages your running costs. “Self-managed” usually goes further: you also arrange insurance and pay servicing, charging and other bills yourself, then claim them back from your packaging account. Maxxia’s self-managed option works this way. You pay insurance upfront and handle your own bills, which are then reimbursed.

The lender owns the car during the lease, just as it would with packager-arranged finance. At the end, you pay the residual to keep the car, refinance it, trade it in or sell it.

Who can get a BYO finance novated lease?

Not everyone. Your employer and its packager both decide whether they’ll accept outside finance, and many won’t.

BYO finance is most common for government employees and large employers. Savvy, a finance comparison business, says self-managed leases are generally limited to those groups (Savvy, 2026). Some packagers don’t accept outside finance at all. EV buyers whose employer uses a single provider report being told flatly that BYO isn’t an option.

Here’s how the main pathways compare, based on what providers publish:

If your employer doesn’t allow BYO, it’s still worth asking HR to add a second provider. Several employees asking for choice carries more weight than one.

How much does BYO finance save?

A BYO lender usually saves money when its rate is lower, and the gap can be large. On one real quote an EV buyer shared in October 2026, a bank offered 7.59% against 10.84% from the employer’s packager, on a Zeekr 7X financed for $74,975 over five years.

We ran both rates on the same amount financed, the same $21,698 residual and the same 58 payments. The packager rate costs about $8,000 more in interest over the lease. The bank’s $595 establishment fee and two-month payment deferral narrow that slightly, but BYO still came out well ahead. The packager quote also financed the first year’s insurance at 10.84%, which adds a few hundred dollars more.

The monthly payments told a different story. The packager quote looked only about $40 a month dearer, because it used a higher residual. A higher residual moves cost onto the balloon payment at the end of the lease, so a worse rate can hide behind a similar monthly figure. That’s the most common mistake people make comparing quotes.

So compare total interest, not the weekly or monthly payment. Ask each provider for:

  • The amount financed, including any fees or insurance rolled in
  • The interest rate, in writing
  • The residual, in dollars and as a percentage
  • The number of payments, and any deferral
  • Every establishment and monthly fee

Novated leases are excluded from the National Credit Code, so providers don’t have to quote a comparison rate the way car loan lenders do. Some packagers also disclose that they may receive commissions from lenders, which is part of why their rates run higher. Our guide to novated lease interest rates shows how to work out the true rate from a quote, and our novated lease calculator runs the numbers.

What you give up with BYO finance

You save on interest, but you lose some things packagers bundle in. Weigh them before you switch.

Fleet pricing on the car. Packagers negotiate fleet discounts with dealers. Easi says self-managed customers lose access to its fleet pricing (Easi, 2025). Brand promotions can also be tied to a packager. Get a cash drive-away price from the dealer yourself, then compare it with the packager’s vehicle price.

Bundled insurance and gap cover. You usually arrange your own comprehensive insurance and pay it upfront. Your lender may require agreed-value cover. Gap cover, which pays the difference if the car is written off and the insurance payout is less than your lease balance, can be harder to buy on your own. Don’t let cover lapse: most leases treat that as a breach.

Convenience. Self-managed leases mean paying bills and claiming them back. Leaselab notes there’s no single coordinator, so paperwork delays are more likely, and mistakes in the pre-tax and post-tax split can create a tax problem (Leaselab, 2026). Owners on packager-run leases report their own frustrations too, including fuel cards that don’t work and fees for services the car already includes. Neither route is hassle-free.

Speed at settlement. Your lender, your employer and the dealer all need to line up. Allow extra time between signing and delivery, and tell the dealer early that a third-party financier is involved.

The tax rules don’t change with BYO finance

The tax treatment is the same whoever lends you the money. The EV fringe benefits tax exemption depends on the car and the employer arrangement, not the financier.

An eligible EV is exempt if it was first held and used on or after 1 July 2022 and cost less than the luxury car tax threshold for fuel-efficient vehicles when first sold. That threshold is $91,661 for 2026-27 (ATO electric cars exemption). The exempt car benefit is still reported on your payment summary, but you don’t make post-tax contributions for it.

Residuals follow the same ATO minimums whether you use a bank or a packager:

Lease termMinimum residual
1 year65.63%
2 years56.25%
3 years46.88%
4 years37.50%
5 years28.13%

The exemption is changing. In the May 2026 Budget, the government announced that arrangements starting from 1 April 2027 for EVs above $75,000 will get a 25 percent FBT discount instead of a full exemption, with all EVs moving to the discount from 1 April 2029 (Treasury ministers’ release, May 2026). Arrangements in place before then keep their treatment. It isn’t law yet, but it’s a reason to settle a lease on a dearer EV before April 2027. The scheme is popular: a Treasury review released in May 2026 found nearly 100,000 people had used the EV exemption by late 2025, mostly through novated leases.

BYO finance makes changing jobs easier

One underrated benefit of your own lender is portability. When you change jobs, the novation agreement ends and the lease reverts to you, but your finance contract carries on unchanged.

That matters if your new employer uses a different packager. With packager-arranged finance, some new providers want to refinance the lease onto their own panel, which can mean new fees and a new residual. With BYO finance, the new packager only takes over the payroll side. The lender, rate and residual all stay where they are. Our guide to changing jobs with a novated lease covers the transfer process and what happens if you’re made redundant.

Is BYO finance worth it?

BYO finance is worth it when your lender beats the packager’s rate by more than about one percentage point and your employer allows it. Below that, the fleet discount, bundled insurance and convenience of a fully maintained lease can close the gap.

It suits you if:

  • Your employer allows it and you’re comfortable paying bills and claiming them back
  • You’ve found a rate well below the packager’s quote on the same car, term and residual
  • You’d rather keep the finance separate from your employer in case you change jobs

Stick with the packager if the quoted rate is competitive, the fleet price on the car is better than you can get yourself, or your employer simply won’t allow outside finance. Our novated lease quote checklist helps you tell whether the packager’s quote is fair before you go looking elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my own finance for a novated lease?
Often, yes, but your employer and its salary packaging provider both have to agree. Many large employers and government departments allow a self-managed or BYO finance lease, where you choose the lender and the packager still runs the pre-tax deductions. Some packagers refuse outside finance entirely, so ask HR in writing first.
Is a BYO finance novated lease cheaper?
Usually, if your lender's rate is lower. On one real October 2026 EV quote, a bank rate of 7.59% against a packager rate of 10.84% on $74,975 over five years saved roughly $8,000 in interest, before a $595 bank fee. You lose fleet discounts and bundled insurance, so compare the total cost.
What is a self-managed novated lease?
It's a novated lease where you arrange the finance, and often the insurance and servicing, yourself. Your employer's packager still deducts the lease payments and running-cost budget from your pre-tax pay. You usually pay bills upfront and claim them back, rather than using a fuel or charging card.
Do I still get the EV FBT exemption with BYO finance?
Yes. The exemption depends on the car and the employer arrangement, not on who lends you the money. An eligible EV below the $91,661 luxury car tax threshold for 2026-27 is exempt whether the finance comes from your packager's panel or your own bank.
Is a novated lease covered by the National Credit Code?
No. Leases provided as part of your employment are excluded from the National Credit Code, so the comparison rate and hardship rules that apply to ordinary car loans don't automatically apply. That's one reason quotes are hard to compare, and why you should ask every provider for the interest rate in writing.
