Overview
Q CELLS was founded in Germany in 1999 and acquired by South Korean conglomerate Hanwha in 2012. The brand carries a strong reputation built on years of German engineering standards and meticulous product quality documentation. The Q.PEAK DUO range uses Q CELLS’ proprietary Q.ANTUM technology and is widely installed across Australian residential rooftops through an established installer and distributor network.
The honest current assessment: Q CELLS is a Korean-owned company with German design heritage manufacturing panels in China and South Korea. The brand name implies a quality premium; the electrical specifications at $0.37/W are below what competitors deliver at lower prices.
Q.ANTUM technology
Q.ANTUM is Q CELLS’ proprietary cell passivation approach - a variant of TOPCon-class surface passivation that Q CELLS has developed and published detailed performance data for over many years. The technology is specifically optimised for:
- Low-light performance: Better output in diffuse radiation conditions (overcast, morning, evening). Particularly relevant in southern Australia, Victoria, and Tasmania where overcast days are more frequent
- Minimal LID (light-induced degradation): N-type Q.ANTUM cells degrade less in the first weeks of operation than older PERC cells
- Conservative specifications: Q CELLS’ German engineering culture means specifications are conservatively stated and well-evidenced
In practice, Q.ANTUM’s advantages are most measurable in consistently overcast climates. For Melbourne, Hobart, and Adelaide, the low-light performance justification is stronger than for Brisbane or Perth.
Where the specs fall short
Efficiency: 21.9% - the lowest efficiency of any N-type TOPCon panel in this comparison. Every competing Tier 1 panel at $0.27–$0.35/W achieves 22–23.6% efficiency. At $0.37/W, this is the weakest efficiency-per-dollar proposition in the comparison.
Temperature coefficient: -0.34%/°C - the worst temperature coefficient of any N-type panel here, matching Trina Vertex S+ at $0.27/W. For Queensland, WA, NT, and inland SA where panel surfaces regularly reach 65–70°C in summer, this means more output loss than most alternatives.
At 65°C panel temperature (40°C above STC):
- Q CELLS (-0.34%): 430W × (1 - 0.0034 × 40) = 430W × 0.864 = 372W
- Canadian Solar (-0.29%): 440W × (1 - 0.0029 × 40) = 440W × 0.884 = 389W
Canadian Solar produces approximately 4.5% more output at the same panel temperature, at $0.07/W less per watt. For QLD or WA, this compounds to thousands of kWh over the system’s life.
Year-25 output: 87.4% - below the class best (89.4% for Trina, 90.6% for AIKO) at competitive prices.
The brand trust case
Q CELLS’ installer penetration in Australia is strong - partly because the brand sells well to residential buyers who recognise names from other product categories, and partly because the installer support network, warranty process, and distributor relationships are well-established.
For installers, recommending Q CELLS is low-risk: customers accept the brand without pushback, and the support chain is reliable. This is commercially valuable even if the technical specifications aren’t industry-leading.
For buyers, the Q CELLS premium translates to a panel that’s well-supported and from a brand with a long track record - not one with the best efficiency or temperature performance.
Q CELLS vs the value tier
| Panel | Efficiency | Yr25 output | Temp coeff | Price/W |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Q CELLS Q.PEAK DUO | 21.9% | 87.4% | -0.34% | $0.37 |
| Trina Vertex S+ | 22% | 89.4% | -0.34% | $0.27 |
| Canadian Solar TOPHiKu6 | 22.5% | 87.4% | -0.29% | $0.30 |
| AIKO Neostar 2P | 23.6% | 90.6% | -0.26% | $0.32 |
The comparison is not favourable. At $0.37/W, Q CELLS is underperformed on every specification by Trina ($0.27/W), Canadian Solar ($0.30/W), and AIKO ($0.32/W). The only advantage Q CELLS brings at this price is brand recognition - not a specification-based recommendation.
Korean-manufactured? Clarifying the production reality
The Q.PEAK DUO is manufactured in China and South Korea under Hanwha ownership. It is not “German-made” - that description no longer applies. The German design heritage remains in the product development methodology and quality standards, but cells and panels are produced in East Asian factories.
Hanwha does maintain Korean manufacturing for some products in their portfolio. Whether the specific Q.PEAK DUO variant available in Australia is Korean-manufactured or Chinese-manufactured should be confirmed with the installer at time of purchase.
Physical specs

Who should buy the Q CELLS Q.PEAK DUO
Best for:
- Buyers in southern Australia (VIC, TAS, ACT) where the Q.ANTUM low-light performance advantage is most relevant
- Buyers who specifically request Q CELLS by brand and whose installer has a strong Q CELLS supply relationship
- Installations where installer confidence and brand recognition are the primary purchase drivers rather than specification maximisation
Skip if:
- You’re in a hot climate (QLD, NT, WA) - the -0.34% temperature coefficient is one of the worst for Australian summer conditions
- You’re comparing on efficiency or price - virtually every alternative delivers better specs at the same or lower cost
- Financial optimisation is the goal - Trina at $0.27/W or Canadian Solar at $0.30/W offer better value on every electrical metric
