if needed
Most Sydney homeowners pay $1,400 to $2,600 for a fully installed 7kW home charger. Labour rates in Sydney sit above the national average, and older homes in suburbs like Balmain, Paddington, and Mosman often need switchboard work that pushes costs higher. Newer builds in areas like Oran Park, Marsden Park, and the Hills District are typically more straightforward.
Sydney-specific considerations
Electricity network
Sydney is split between two distributors. Ausgrid covers the CBD, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs, Northern Beaches, and North Shore. Endeavour Energy covers Western Sydney, the Hills, and South West. Your electrician handles the notification to the right distributor.
Off-peak charging rates
On a time-of-use tariff, off-peak electricity in Sydney runs around $0.12 to $0.22/kWh (typically 10pm to 7am). Charging a 60kWh EV overnight costs roughly $7 to $13. That is around 400-500km of driving for under $13.
Older homes
Federation and interwar homes across the Inner West, Surry Hills, and Manly often have single-phase power and aged switchboards. A switchboard upgrade is common in these areas and adds $1,000 to $2,800 to the job. Your installer will assess this during the quote.
Apartment and strata installs
If you live in a unit block in suburbs like Bondi, Chatswood, or Parramatta, you will need strata approval before installation. NSW strata law allows owners to install EV chargers, but the body corporate can set conditions around metering and cable routing. Our installers can help with the strata application process.

Common questions about Sydney EV charger installation
How much does EV charger installation cost in Sydney?
A typical Sydney installation costs $1,400 to $2,600 including the charger unit and labour. Inner city and Eastern Suburbs jobs tend to sit at the higher end due to older wiring and tighter access. If your switchboard needs upgrading, add $1,000 to $2,800.
Do I need to notify Ausgrid before installing?
Yes, if your charger draws more than 20A on single-phase (most 7kW chargers draw 32A). Your electrician handles the Ausgrid notification for you. If you are in Western Sydney, the notification goes to Endeavour Energy instead. There is no fee or wait time.
Are there EV charger rebates in NSW?
NSW does not offer a direct rebate for residential EV charger installation as of 2026. There are EV purchase incentives (stamp duty exemption on BEVs under $78,000 and a $750 first-year registration discount) but nothing for charger hardware specifically.
How long does installation take?
Most Sydney installations take 2 to 4 hours. If a switchboard upgrade is needed or the cable run is long (common in older homes in suburbs like Balmain and Paddington), it can stretch to a full day.
